Best Show DVD Arrives!

Remember months and months ago when I mentioned working on a “secret project”? Well I can finally talk about it, because the Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling DVDs have finally shipped and are showing up on doorsteps worldwide!

I was lucky enough to contribute After Effects animation to a music video for a song by the band Fucked Up (whose amazing new album, David Comes to Life, just came out). The song, “Ballad of Hammerhead” is steeped in Best Show mythology. It’s actually about a character from the show named Hammerhead who goes to hardcore shows to regulate and make sure there are “no weak pits.” The video treatment was written by none other than Matt Fraction, and the illustrations were done by Chip Zdarsky. Additional animation and compositing were provided by John Dretzka and Adam Shumaker.

So psyched that people can finally see our hard work! If you’re not already a super-fan of The Best Show on WFMU, check out the iTunes podcasts to get yourself up to speed. The “Best Show Gems” podcast contains hand-picked hilarious calls between host Tom Scharpling and the many characters of his comedy partner Jon Wurster (who also happens to drum for Superchunk and Mountain Goats). The main podcast contains the whole show (minus the music segment), including calls from real listeners, who are sometimes as bizarre and hilarious as Jon’s characters, and there are always plenty of special guests, including but not limited to: Paul F Tompkins, Jen Kirkman, Jon Hodgman, Aziz Ansari, Julie Klausner, Paul Scheer, Ted Leo…

Thinking of giving it a shot? Don’t think about it – DO IT!

Here’s a drawing I did for my pal Myke Chilian’s birthday. You may remember him as the wolf boy from Googy episode 4, or the creator of McBusters.

Best Show Animated

Hey all! I’ve been so caught up in the RAZ comics lately that I haven’t done any animation (aside from my day jobs) in a while. I decided to animate some audio from my favorite radio show, The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling, in order to get the ball rolling again.

Got a couple seconds of test footage, but I’m not gonna share the footage until it’s all completed. In the meantime, here’s the first screenshot of Tom in the studio!

If you’ve not listened to The Best Show before, please do so post haste. It’s as easy as downloading the podcasts on iTunes. There’s even a “Best Show Gems” podcast with the best of the Scharpling & Wurster comedy bits.

Googy Doodle!

Hey guys! If you haven’t seen the magic that is Googy (a current “prime time” show on Channel 101), you’re really missing out. It’s pretty fantastic. I had the good fortune of helping out on the latest episode (episode 3), and I just threw together this doodle tonight while thinking about the show.

Oh, and here are a couple of the props I built for the show: a giant piece of bacon and a dog with sunglasses. Look for them in the episode!

New RAD RAZ Comic

Today’s Saturday, so you know what that means: a brand new RAD RAZ comic on Dumm Comics. This one is sort of a throw-back to the old 3 panel jokes I used to do with the original run of RAZ comics back in 2007-2008. People have been asking for a return to these simple, quick jokes where RAZ does something really over the top and outrageous and maintains a deadpan expression throughout. Well, I’m throwing you a bone, folks! But I’m not naive enough to believe that I can please everyone all the time, so it’s back to the longer format again for next week’s comic!

PS: Next week is the RAD RAZ Christmas Special!
